'Tried really hard to be someone I wasn’t' - KL Rahul reflects on cricket journey

Regarding the class and talent that KL Rahul possesses, there have been very few questions. Since his early years, Rahul has consistently appeared to be a batter with access to a large arsenal of weapons. He has seen several significant failures in his international career, but he has always handled things calmly.

Rahul talked about his development as a cricket player in a recent conversation. He acknowledged attempting to become someone he wasn’t and mentioned two cricket players he admired, hoping to follow in their footsteps and achieve success in 20-over cricket.

“I believe that both personally and as a player, I developed. I made a concerted effort as a child to be someone I wasn’t and to prove I could by hitting massive sixes. It was simply not happening naturally. When I watched Rahul Dravid during one of the 2011 or 2012 IPL seasons, that’s when things changed for me. He was among the top batsmen and remained faithful to his technique. Rahul said in an exclusive interview with Star Sports, “It changed something in me to see him play well in one-day and T20 cricket without altering his game.

At SRH, I also had some time with Kane Williamson. He would return and play fantastic white-ball innings for New Zealand even though he didn’t get many opportunities. Observing Dravid and Williamson made me realize that I didn’t have to put in as much effort. I had some talents that I could use to succeed in Twenty20 cricket,” he continued.

As soon as the performances began, the confidence came: KL Rahul

He also mentioned AB de Villiers and Virat Kohli, both of whom Rahul acknowledged had a significant influence on his T20 style of play.

Things became clear to me after I adopted that perspective. The top T20 players in the world, Virat and AB, guided me during the 2016 IPL. Even discussing my game with them throughout training had an impact. When the performances began to flow, the confidence came,” Rahul continued.

It’s interesting to note that Rahul had his greatest T20I season for India in 2016 in terms of average and strike rate, scoring 179 runs in four innings at an average of 89.50 and a strike rate of 159.82. He also had an above-average IPL season (397 runs in 12 innings).
