Rishabh Pant and Daryl Mitchell return to top 10 in ICC Men's Test Batting Rankings

New Zealand all-rounder Daryl Mitchell and India wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant returned to the top 10 of the ICC Men’s Test Batting Rankings following strong showings in the third game of their ICC World Test Championship series in Mumbai.

During an unsuccessful chase of 147, Rishabh Pant scored 60 in the first innings and a doughty 64 in the second.

He has moved up five spots to sixth place, one spot off his career-high fifth position from July 2022. Mitchell has moved up eight spots to seventh place after scoring 82 and 21. He was rated third in September of this year before falling down the ladder.

The Series’ Player Will Young has advanced 29 spots to 44th place with a career-high 550 rating points with to his 71 and 51-run scores, while Glenn Phillips, another New Zealand hitter, has moved up from 45th to 42nd place.

Though India opener Yashaswi Jaiswal has dropped to fourth place and former captain Virat Kohli is out of the top 20 Test batters for the first time since December 2014, after almost a decade, Shubman Gill’s first innings score of 90 has moved him up from 20th to 16th place.

The most recent men’s weekly rankings update also takes into account the performances in the second Test match between South Africa and Bangladesh in Chattogram, where three South African players achieved their first hundreds in the same innings—just the second such event in Test history—and all three of them made significant gains: Tony de Zorzi moved up 32 spots to 38th place, Tristan Stubbs moved up 27 spots to 71st place, and Wiaan Mulder moved up 19 spots to 75th place.

Left-arm spinners Ravindra Jadeja of India and Player of the Match Ajaz Patel of New Zealand have improved their bowling rankings following their performances at Wankhede Stadium.

Jadeja’s third 10-wicket haul helped him pass the 800-point milestone and move up from ninth to sixth place, while Patel’s 11 wickets gave him a 12-rung rise to a career-best 22nd place.

Keshav Maharaj, a left-arm spinner from South Africa, has also risen in the rankings, going from 23rd to 19th, following his second innings total of five for 59.

After finishing with a five-for in the first innings, fast bowler Kagiso Rabada gained 11 rating points, solidifying his position at the top of the table.

All-rounder Washington Sundar of India has risen on all three lists, and bowling ranks have seen advancements from Bangladesh’s Nayeem Hasan, New Zealand’s Ish Sodhi, and India’s Akash Deep.

After losing to New Zealand 3-0, India dropped to second place in the ICC World Test Championship standings. In terms of the qualifying percentage points, Australia is currently leading, although South Africa and New Zealand have recovered well.

With seven series remaining in the third season of the World Test Championship, South Africa (54.17), New Zealand (54.55), Sri Lanka (55.56), Australia (62.50), and India (58.33) are all in the running.
