Historic Boxing Day Test: Zimbabwe to host Afghanistan after 28 years

From December 2024 to January 2025, Zimbabwe will host Afghanistan for an all-format series, which will include their first Boxing Day Test since 1996. The two teams will play three Twenty20 Internationals and as many One-Day Internationals as possible before starting the two-match Test series.

Following the red-ball series will be the white-ball matches in Harare. This will be Zimbabwe’s first Boxing Day Test in 28 years, with the first Test taking place in Bulawayo on December 26. A rain-affected match that ended in a tie was the 1996 match against England.

The historic first Test and the New Year’s Test at the same location were discussed in detail by Tavengwa Mukuhlani, the chairperson of Zimbabwe Cricket. He was also certain that the series will proceed with the same intensity as Zimbabwe’s previous meetings with Afghanistan.

“This festive season, we are thrilled to be adding two legendary cricket fixtures to our calendar: Boxing Day and the New Year’s Test matches. We look forward to celebrating in style one of the greatest traditions in the sport’s lengthy history. To show our dedication to raising our game in every format, we will begin a comprehensive tour with some T20I and ODI action in Harare prior to the Test series that is set for Bulawayo. We have no doubt that the players will provide some fantastic entertainment appropriate for such a historic tour,” Mukuhlani said, quoting. “Matchups between Zimbabwe and Afghanistan are typically intense and thrilling affairs.”

An important occasion for us is the all-format tour to Zimbabwe: Mirwais Ashraf

thoughts were voiced by Mirwais Ashraf, the chairperson of the Afghanistan Cricket Board. “For us, the all-format  tour to Zimbabwe is a big deal. It has always been difficult to play in Zimbabwe, where we have a long history, but I think the Afghan Atalan can handle the task with assurance,” Ashraf said.

There have only been two Test matches between Zimbabwe and Afghanistan, in addition to the 28 ODIs and 15 T20Is that have been played between them. In the two matches, which took place in Abu Dhabi, each team won one match.
