In the first ODI between New Zealand and India at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, Sophie Devine lost her wicket due to a moment of mental weakness. The incident occurred off the last ball of the 12th over when the player gazed directly into bowler Deepti Sharma’s eyes while playing a forward defence. The stumps were removed by keeper Yastika Bhatia after Deepti grabbed the ball and delivered it to her calmly.
Sophie Devine was completely unaware of what had transpired.
When it was displayed on the big screen, it was evident that the New Zealand international had fallen just short of the crease when the leg-umpire went upstairs to check. The White Ferns lost their third wicket for 46 runs after she left the game for just two runs due to a lack of focus.

At the same time, India scored 227 runs while batting first. Smriti Mandhana, the opener, had another poor performance, managing just five runs as her partner Shafali Verma scored 33 off 22 balls. With 37 runs, Yastika batted at number three. India then suffered for a short time before the middle order seized over.
Tejal Hasabnis got 42 runs in his debut, while Jemimah Rodrigues scored 35. According to the BCCI, she took the place of captain Harmanpreet Kaur in the starting lineup after the latter was forced to sit out due to a niggle. However, Deepti too had a respectable batting performance, getting 41 runs. Nevertheless, none of the hitters were able to come through for the hosts with a large score.

Four wickets were taken by Amelia Kerr for New Zealand. She was the team’s standout performer in the women’s T20 World Cup and demonstrated her worth in the opening ODI. Meanwhile, Jess Kerr claimed three wickets.
