Washington Sundar seemed like only guy the New Zealand batters were dreading: Saba Karim

So far, the hosts' sole bright spot has been the bowling all-rounder.

Washington Sundar seemed like only guy the New Zealand batters were dreading: Saba Karim

Only two days have passed since the start of the second Test match between India and New Zealand, and to be honest, the hosts have been under pressure for the most of the match.

It has been the return of Washington Sundar thus far, much like Sarfaraz Khan, who was the only player to shine out in India’s series-opening defeat in Bengaluru. Sundar devoured the last seven of the Kiwi’s first innings wickets. In the BlackCaps’ second essay, he carried on in his own way, getting rid of four of the five batters till Stumps of Day 2.

Saba Karim, a former India wicketkeeper-batter, explained why Sundar was difficult for the opposition batters to handle during his first five-day international in over three years.

Since height is a major consideration and may be the reason for his selection in the team’s draft, it appears that Washington Sundar is the only bowler that the New Zealand hitters have been dreading. The bounce he can extract and the tempo he creates are excellent. Speaking to JioCinema, Karim said, “I believe he has been more dishonest in his trajectory to beat the batters.”

Sundar’s Test career should be greatly bolstered by this performance: Karim Karim also noted that, given the way the current campaign has gone, the Tamil Nadu all-rounder ought to be able to be a fixture in the Test lineup for a considerable amount of time.

“He has taken a long time to get back into this Test side, but I think this Test match performance should really embolden Washington Sundar’s career from hereon,” said Karim.

Remarkably, Sundar has only participated in four Test matches for India before this one. He has been given more chances to play in the white-ball system and has essentially established himself as a mainstay for the restricted overs team.
