Virat Kohli, the star batsman for India, was dismissed for a nine-ball knock on Day 2 of the second Test match between India and New Zealand, scoring just one run in India’s opening innings. But the way he was fired wasn’t at all Kohli-like. The delivery he used to get off the mark against Mitchell Santner was identical.
It was quite possible that a low full-toss that was dipping as it got closer to Virat Kohli might have been played to mid-on and handled with little trouble.
On the other hand, Kohli attempted an odd cut across the line. The ball managed to evade Kohli’s bat’s bottom. While Santner remained modest in his jubilation, Kohli stood on one knee, trying to process what had just happened. As he walked back to the pavilion, he was filled with rage.

The second scalp of the morning for Santner was Kohli. He had just finished his last over when he hit Shubman Gill plumb in front with a ball that continued to travel down his arm and slam into his front pad. Without hesitation, umpire Paul Reiffel lifted his finger.

Even as late as India’s 27th over, it was unexpected that a useful spinner like Glenn Phillips entered the assault. After he launched a superbly controlled delivery on a length that even the temperamental Yashasvi Jaiswal could not withstand, he demonstrated why Tom Latham should have brought him on sooner.
