Ranji Trophy 2024-25: 17-year-old Ayush Mhatre smashes 176 for Mumbai in Round 2

Mumbai’s team saw two outstanding performances versus Maharashtra in the current Ranji Trophy 2024 match. While his senior pro Shreyas Iyer made a spectacular return to form with a critical hundred after a run of poor scores, 17-year-old Ayush Mhatre hammered a magnificent maiden first-class century.

On a difficult field where Maharashtra was dismissed for just 126, Mhatre took it upon himself to get his team back on track after Hardik Tamore and Prithvi Shaw fell cheaply and forged vital partnerships with Iyer and skipper Ajinkya Rahane. With 22 fours and four sixes, Mhatre scored 176 off 232 balls in his innings.

“I was certain that the first hundred is always special, and this innings continued to build on that.”

The squad wants me to play with control and in accordance with the scenario, which is what Ayush Mhatre stated following his century.

Originating from the far-off Mumbai district of Virar, the boy would frequently travel 80 kilometers in pursuit of his goals. In just his third first-class match, Mhatre’s efforts have finally paid off thanks to the support of his family, especially his grandfather and uncle. After Musheer Khan was involved in an automobile accident, the right-hander, who had not been included in the team at first, was brought in.

Shreyas Iyer scores his eleventh Ranji Trophy century with a bang.

Iyer, on the other hand, couldn’t have timed his century better. Finally, after a lean spell, the seasoned batter lifted his bat. Batting for 101 runs, the 29-year-old remains at the crease alongside Suryakumar Yadav. Iyer’s century gave him a lot of confidence because he wasn’t playing at his best in the Irani Cup final or the Duleep Trophy 2024.

Mhatre and Iyer’s combination was the primary factor in Mumbai’s secure position in the match; at lunchtime on Day 2, the team was ahead by 209 runs at 335/4.
