As he approaches a milestone that might make him one of Australia’s top two wicket-takers in history, along with the late Shane Warne, legendary off-spinner Nathan Lyon recently shared his thoughts on keeping spin bowling cool for the future generation.
There was a gap in cricket, especially in the spin bowling, after Warne’s unexpected death in 2022. In addition to bringing the craft back to life in the 1990s, Warne encouraged a number of bowlers to pursue careers in the sport. Lyon is currently leading the charge to continue that tradition.
“There is no hiding behind it; I certainly understand the duty of flying the flag for the spinners around the nation. I feel like I have a significant part to play in keeping spin cool, especially now that Warnie is gone. Although I’m not cool in any manner, Lyon stated, “It’s pretty cool if I can try to promote spin bowling and show how great it is to be a spin bowler.”

There are no indications that the 36-year-old veteran’s career will slow down. With 530 Test wickets under his belt, he is only 33 runs short of Glenn McGrath’s 563 total. Lyon has the chance to further cement his place in Australian cricket history with the forthcoming Test series against India and Sri Lanka.
Prior to suffering a calf injury during the Ashes series last year, Lyon played 100 straight Test matches. Australia’s recent achievements can be attributed in large part to this consistency. Lyon attributes his understanding of the wider implications of his role to a discussion he had with his father.
“Just having that discussion and realizing that we serve as role models for a wide range of individuals worldwide in a variety of ways. And we’re doing our job if we can contribute in any way to help individuals become better persons or cricket players,” he continued.
Additionally, he shared his enthusiasm for emerging players like Tanveer Sangha and Todd Murphy, calling the latter a future game star.

“His future contributions to Australia and New South Wales will be nothing short of extraordinary. He is a class legspinner who is very secure in his skill set, and I really like the way he approaches things. He will become the game’s superstar. He helps me get better, and I strive to help him get better,” Lyon said.
