Gautam Gambhir used to wait for Sanju Samson to do well before tweeting: Aakash Chopra

Sanju Samson and Gautam Gambhir have shared the dressing room playing for Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) and Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League. Gambhir, who led KKR and was a mentor during IPL 2024, had motivated the Kerala batter to show the world what he is capable of after getting picked in T20 World Cup 2024 squad. Though the batter could not feature in the playing XI, the duo is now under the same roof as Gambhir has assumed India’s head coach charge.

Throughout the Bangladesh series, Gambhir had faith in Samson, and the latter rewarded him with a brilliant century on October 12 in the third and final game after two lacklustre performances. Remarking on the friendship between Gambhir and Samson, former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra disclosed that he had a talk with the right-handed batter in which he asked him to hit a big shot only to show his gratitude to Gambhir.

This brings us to the topic of discussion: Sanju Samson. It was tweeted by Gautam Gambhir a few years back that Sanju Samson is the best young batsman in India as well as the best wicketkeeper-batter. Samson should have no other goals in life but to get Gautam to tweet, Chopra stated on his YouTube channel during an interview with him.

“Before tweeting, Gautam Gambhir would wait for Sanju to perform well

His batting performance may have kept him a Sanju fan. He first struck five sixes in a single over. He claimed he had been asked to do so by his mentor. I wondered why his master never mentioned six sixes,” he said.

At Hyderabad’s Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, Samson was in rampant form against Bangladesh. After reaching his half-century in just 22 balls, he needed just 40 deliveries to reach his first T20I century. With an impressive strike rate of 236.17, he broke eight maximums and eleven boundaries.
