Head coach Bangladesh Hashan Tillakaratne reflects on coming match against South Africa, "We need to play for our pride"

Bangladeshi women will play South African women in the Women’s T20 World Cup of 2024. On October 12, both teams will square off in the tournament’s sixteenth encounter at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. It is noteworthy that the Bangladeshi ladies have played three games, won one, lost two, and are presently ranked fourth in the standings.

Bangladesh’s final group stage match of the tournament will be against the South African ladies, and head coach Hashan Tillakaratne recently spoke about the significance of the match.

“We must play South Africa for the sake of our prestige. We have already defeated them once, now it is up to us all to come together and play better. The ICC cited Hashan Tillakaratne as saying, “We can control our own game and play to our potential, even though we know there are certain things that we can’t control.”

Bangladesh’s eligibility for the knockout stages is still open.

Bangladesh is mathematically still able to go to the Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 knockout stages, despite having lost two of their three games thus far. Bangladesh’s net run rate would surpass South Africa with a victory of 68 runs or a successful run chase in about 8.2 overs.

To exit the group stage on four points with a net run rate blow significant enough to be below Bangladesh’s, the team would still need to defeat either the West Indies or England. Bangladesh might be able to go to the knockout stages with just the right amount of luck, but everything would need to fall into place.

The team won their opening match against Scotland, but they struggled to defeat England and the West Indies. Their next challenge is South Africa’s ladies.
