‘Focus is on helping England win matches’ – Joe Root on targeting Sachin Tendulkar’s Test run record

"I think, more than anything, you judge yourself based on how many games you can affect and how many games you can win for the team," he added.

'Focus is on helping England win matches' - Joe Root on targeting Sachin Tendulkar's Test run record

Over the years, Joe Root has been an invaluable batsman for England, particularly in Test cricket. He is now ranked No. 6 among the top run scorers in the game’s longest format thanks to his steady play. It will take Root just 71 more runs to surpass his country’s record run scorer in Test cricket. He trails only Alastair Cook, his former captain, who concluded his remarkable red-ball career with 12,472 runs.

Given his age of just 31, Root has a lot of support in his quest to surpass Sachin Tendulkar‘s global record for the most Test runs. Although the Master Blaster finished his career with an incredible 15,921 runs, Root’s rapid progress may cause him to surpass him.

When Root spoke to the media in Multan prior to the England vs. Pakistan three-match Test series, a question about whether he was aiming for Tendulkar’s record was posed to him. The former Test skipper acknowledged that he was more concerned with seeing England win games, though.

“I believe that more than anything, you evaluate yourself according to the number of games you can influence and win for the team. How many times I can help England win games is what motivates me the most. That is sufficient motivation for me if I approach every situation with that mindset and aim to succeed no matter what. I want to continue having fun and playing. “I look at enjoying that at the moment,” Joe Root remarked on Saturday, October 5, in response to a question from Sachin Tendulkar.

During the Pakistan tour, Root was asked if he was hoping to surpass Cook’s run total. He said that he wasn’t trying for a specific record and that he would like to play for England for a very long time.

“People’s constant questions about it is the only explanation that can come to mind. I intend to continue playing Test cricket for a very long time. I just want to keep playing and taking pleasure in the game; it’s not like I’m going to reach a certain number or mark and stop. We have a fantastic time both on and off the pitch, making it a great team to play on. I will be motivated to perform and keep helping the squad win games as long as that is the case, said Root.

Monday, October 7 is the start of the first Test, which will take place at Multan Cricket Stadium. England will like to keep up their winning trend against a nervous Pakistan team, which is coming off its first-ever Test series loss to Bangladesh. England recently defeated the West Indies and Sri Lanka at home.
