England has consistently failed to advance to the World Test Championship finals. Despite winning their last five games in a row, they were unable to advance to the finals in the 2019–21 cycle and placed fourth in the 2021–23 iteration. They are now in fourth place in the current cycle, with Australia, Sri Lanka, and India ahead of them with higher point percentages, hence they have no chance of qualifying for the finals either.
Former England spinner Monty Panesar has provided insight into the methodology used by the people who developed “Bazball” cricket. According to him, the team is only trying to amuse the crowd by playing their bold style of cricket.
“England wishes not to compete in the World Test Championship championship game.” To play exciting cricket is their aim. It’s a distinct brand of cricket even when I see it. That type of cricket is not played by other countries. England is playing against the conventional cricketing approach, but they are also playing like a team that is playing to delight the spectators and the other team that wins.
Monty Panesar, speaking exclusively to on the sidelines of LLC 2024, remarked, “They are playing a ramp shot with the new ball and it is astonishing the way they are playing cricket.”
For those who don’t know, after England made a mistake in the fourth innings of the Rajkot Test, the legendary Geoffrey Boycott took a sharp swipe at the country’s tactics. Michael Vaughan, a former England captain, even accused the team of demeaning Test cricket. However, every time the English batted, the spectators on the other side were glued to their TVs. Panesar went on to say that the team would prefer Ashes to WTC in their cabinet.
“England is not focused on the World Test Championship; their goal is to win the Ashes trophy.” To be honest, any cricket player from England would pick Ashes over WTC if given the option.
