IPL teams are upset with new RTM clause and have written to BCCI

Regarding the new RTM (Right to Match) clause for the next IPL 2025 auction, seven of the ten IPL (Indian Premier League) franchises have come up and questioned the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India). It is important to note that the BCCI has declared the terms of the impending auction.

According to the rules, the team that bids the highest for a player will have the ability to increase their bid before the team that held that player exercises its right to match. It’s also important to remember that the RTM holding team must match the higher bid, whatever of its value, in order to retain the player.

It’s interesting to note that, should they choose not to retain any players, each franchise may use their RTM rights for a maximum of six players. “The highest bidder will be given one final opportunity to raise their bid for a player before the team holding the RTM card can exercise their right,” said the rule.

“Team 1 will be asked first if they will exercise RTM, and if Team 1 accepts, then Team 2 will have the opportunity to increase their price. For instance, if Team 1 holds the RTM for Player X and Team 2 has made the highest bid of Rs. 6 Cr. Team 1 may use the RTM to purchase Player X for Rs. 9 Cr if Team 2 increases their bid to Rs. 9 Cr. Team 1 can use the RTM to acquire Player X for Rs. 6 Cr if Team 2 decides not to raise the bid and maintains it at Rs. 6 Cr, according to the BCCI.

Several IPL clubs are reportedly taking problem with this restriction, as reported by, and they have even written to the BCCI about it.

The teams said that the RTM cards should be used to assess a player’s value, and that value is compromised when the exercising team is required to match an arbitrary higher number rather than an incremental one.
