The start of the second day of the India vs. Bangladesh Kanpur Test didn’t seem very hopeful either, following the cancellation of the first day’s play due to poor light and the full cancellation of the first day due to an unexpected downpour.
An hour before play was supposed to begin, there was a light drizzle. The International Cricket Council (ICC) stipulates in its playing conditions that play may begin thirty minutes before the scheduled start time in order to make up for the overs missed the day before. But none of that was going to happen.
Even though there was no sign of rain for a little more than an hour in the morning, the ground was still covered. Still, there was a good deal of water smeared throughout the covering. We tried three super soppers, but to no effect. The light had slightly improved by the time the first session was lost. Virender Sharma, the game’s backup umpire, had gone onto the outfield to speak with the grounds crew.
On-field umpires have occasionally struck up conversations with ground crew members. But none of the conversations seemed to go on long enough, as after a few minutes of talking, the umpires would simply go to the dressing room. That was very much a good indication of what was to happen because at 2 pm the day was eventually called off.
Remarkably, the last time a full day’s play was cancelled was in Bengaluru, during South Africa’s multi-format series visit to India, nine years prior. Interestingly, in that match, India had also chosen to bowl first. Following strong batting performances from Shikhar Dhawan and Murali Vijay, Ashwin and Jadeja shared eight wickets in that match. But because of the unceasing rain, the Test was called off after play on the first day because of a wet outfield, in addition to the second day being totally wiped out.
Spectators hope for action on Day Three.
While the outlook for Sunday doesn’t seem perfect, it is anticipated to go much better than it did on the second day. The fervent supporters who had surrounded the squad buses on Day 2 and formed a queue outside the stadium.

In addition, supporters in both nations will be hoping for less weather reports and more on-field action the following day. It is predicted to rain a little bit. But it’s also thought that the sun is out.
