The ECB's plan to privatise The Hundred will be delayed

The eight teams that are part of The Hundred will soon be put up for sale. This was previously confirmed by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB). The intention was to have everything finalised by the beginning of the following issue, but according to ECB Director of Business Operations Vikram Banerjee, it will take some time to locate the right partners who can provide both money and knowledge.

Interestingly, every county in The Hundred owns 51% of the stake, which they are free to keep or sell for a profit. The remaining 49% is held by ECB, and they are seeking purchasers. According to, the proceeds from the sale of the 49% ownership will be split between the recreational game, Marylebone Cricket Club, and first-class counties.

“Getting the right partners is the most important thing.” That requires some time, if that’s the case. It seems OK to me. We’ve been in the game for four years, so it’s okay if during this initial round we discover that one or more teams lack the values, or that one or more teams don’t have the suitable partner. We’ll simply keep running it for an additional year. Getting the appropriate partners, making them fantastic, and assisting in our growth are my top priorities, Banerjee stated on the Business of Sport podcast.

“But we’ll hold it, work with the MCC for another year, and try again in a year if we don’t get the right partners for [eg] London Spirit.” That seems feasible to me. Having said that, as far as a schedule goes, we are expecting to complete things over the next six months, so that by the 2025 season, those deals will have been completed, regardless of how the competition perceives this new reality.

In August, The Telegraph revealed that the GMR group, which jointly own Delhi Capitals, had reached an agreement to purchase Hampshire for £120 million, so acquiring a 51 percent stake in Southern Brave. It’s still not official, though.

The European Central Bank (ECB) reportedly held many talks with overseas investors. In addition to the GMR group, discussions are presently underway for the Sun group, who owns Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL, to acquire Northern Superchargers.
