ENG vs AUS 2024: Brydon Carse takes great catch to dismiss Steven Smith in 3rd ODI

At the Riverside Ground in Chester-le-Street on Tuesday, during the third One-Day International (ODI) between Australia and England, Brydon Carse of England made headlines with a breathtaking diving catch that removed Australia’s Steve Smith.

England won the toss and chose to bowl first to start the game. Australia, who was ahead 2-0 in the series, was hoping for one more victory to seal the deal, but the hosts had other ideas. Early in the Australian innings, there were setbacks when Mitchell Marsh and Matthew Short left with modest scores.

Steven Smith tried a massive shot to quicken the scoring pace against Jofra Archer in the 35th over. The ball blasted into Brydon Carse’s position at the square boundary.

But Smith was the one who pulled the ship straight, recording a patient but vital inning. Just as he was approaching his half-century mark and looking for a possible century, the right-hand hitter steadily settled into his groove after getting off to a poor start.

The Englishmen dashed to his left, tried a complete dive, and successfully caught the ball only inches above the ground. At 60 off 82 balls, Smith’s innings came to an end, leaving the tourists at a perilous 172/5.

England maintains its chances for a series win.

Australia amassed 304/7 in spite of Smith’s absence, courtesy of an undefeated 77 from Alex Carey and important contributions from Aaron Hardie (44) and Cameron Green (42). Jofra Archer was the most impressive bowler for England, taking two wickets.

England’s chase was disheartening as they were struggling at 11/2 after losing early wickets, but Will Jacks (84) and Harry Brook (110*) struck a fantastic partnership that altered the tide of play. Australia was pushed on the back foot by England’s aggressive batting, and when the rain stopped play, England was comfortably ahead on the DLS system, securing an important victory.

The series is currently tied at 2-1, but this win has given the home team hope. On September 27, both sides will play in the fourth One-Day International at Lord’s.
