Mitchell Marsh after Australia's win over England in the 2nd ODI, "Partnerships with the tailenders go a long way"

In Headingley, Leeds, Australia defeated England by 68 runs in the second One-Day International of the series. The visitors got off to a strong start as they batted first thanks to captain Mitchell Marsh’s leadership. With 59 deliveries, he scored 60 runs. Alex Carey, a keeper-batter, took care of business after being dismissed, scoring 74 runs. England was challenged to chase 271 runs in the second innings, and his 49-run partnership for the 10th wicket with Josh Hazlewood proved to be quite useful.

The hosts found it challenging to chase after losing wickets at critical junctures. To help the Three Lions surpass the 200-run mark, bottom order batsmen Adil Rashid, Brydon Carse, and Jacob Bethell each scored 25, 26, and 27 runs. Keeper-battler Jamie Smith contributed 49 runs. Nonetheless, Australian bowlers were excellent, especially Mitchell Starc, who took three wickets to help the team win.

Following the victory, Australia’s captain, Mitchell Marsh, emphasised the value of forming partnerships with the tailenders.

Carey initially had a great outing with 23-run scorer Aaron Hardie, and then he partnered with Hazlewood to win the game. Following the match, Marsh said he was pleased with the way the seasoned bowlers performed and thought the target of 271 runs was not particularly high for modern-day cricket.

270 is always a little short these days. But we knew we would still be in the game if we took early wickets. It demonstrates how important it is to form alliances with the tailenders. Simply said, we placed them under pressure and the ball was moving around as we attempted to defend a total like that. It’s hard to play England in England. A handful of our players suffered injuries, but today we welcomed back a few veterans. Extremely happy with our current situation, Marsh remarked following the match.
