ENG vs AUS, 2nd ODI review: Australia continues to dominate England with another victory

England and Australia continued their ongoing ODI series by facing off in the second ODI. Both sides locked horns at the Headingley Stadium, in Leeds, on Saturday, September 21, and the clash began with Australia coming in to bat first after losing the toss.

Matthew Short and Travis Head scored 29 runs apiece to start the side’s innings, while Mitchell Marsh contributed a solid performance to put 60 runs on the board. Following the strong beginning, experienced hitter Steve Smith was benched after just four runs, and Marnus Labuschagne added 19 more runs to the tally.

In addition, Alex Cary’s knock was the most notable in the middle order. When he batted, the elite wicketkeeper scored 74 runs off of 67 deliveries. Glenn Maxwell, an all-rounder, was also removed for just seven runs, thus he was unable to contribute.

Australia scored 270 runs in the first innings thanks to a few efforts spread throughout the innings. Brydon Carse took the most wickets for England during the first innings, claiming three for the team. Olly Stone scored one wicket, while Adil Rashid, Jacob Bethell, and Matthew Potts each claimed two wickets.

England’s top order broke under the pressure of the chase

England lost their opening pair, Phil Salt and Ben Duckett, for scores of 12 and 32, respectively, as they entered to chase a target of 271. In addition, after Harry Brook scored just four runs and Will Jacks was removed for a duck, things began to get worse.

In an attempt to stay in the middle for as long as possible, Jamie Smith also added 49 runs. Liam Livingstone, on the other hand, left for a duck. With Jacob Bethell and Brydon Carse adding 25 and 26 runs to the scoreboard, respectively, England’s chances of reaching the goal was dwindling by the minute. Eventually, they were bowled out for 202 runs in the second innings.
