Darren Lehmann leaves his coaching position with the Brisbane Heat and Queensland to take up a radio commentary job

Darren Lehmann, a former Australian cricket coach, has made the decision to take a part-time job providing radio commentary in addition to his coaching duties with the Brisbane Heat and Queensland Bulls. In just their second season as a coach, Lehmann guided the Brisbane Heat to their first Big Bash League championship after taking over for Queensland in 2010.

His achievements did not end there. From 2013 to 2018, he coached the Australian national side, leading them to a 5-0 Ashes victory and the 2015 World Cup championship.

Most recently serving as an assistant coach. Being a member of the coaching team that helped the Brisbane Heat win their second BBL championship earlier this year was his last contribution to this position.

Darren Lehmann continued to support Queensland cricket after returning to domestic cricket in 2019

“I’ve had a terrific experience travelling, and I have a lot of happy memories from that period. Lehmann said in a statement made public by Brisbane Heat, “I wish everyone at QC and the Heat nothing but the best for the future. I also want to thank all of the staff members and the playing group for making my time at QC so enjoyable and fulfilling.”

Darren has been a positive and proactive influence: Terry Svenson

Terry Svenson, the CEO of Queensland Cricket, acknowledged Lehmann’s positive achievements and noted his significant influence on cricket.

“Darren has been a positive and proactive influence on cricket in the State throughout his long involvement with us,” the statement read. “He has helped individual players with their development or served as a team coach with the Bulls and Heat.”

Even though Lehmann still had a year remaining on his contract, his departure is unexpected, but it also presents fresh prospects for Queensland Cricket and Lehmann, who will collaborate with assistant coach Andy Bichel and head coach Johan Botha.

Lehmann now has a new platform to share his extensive expertise and opinions with cricket fans after joining ABC Sport’s commentary team.
