IPL player retention regulation may be delayed by BCCI

An important update on the Player Retention Regulation has been provided by BCCI ahead of the massive IPL 2025 auction.

IPL player retention regulation may be delayed by BCCI

It is possible to delay the release of the retention regulations much longer. Rumours are circulating among IPL franchise owners and officials that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) may delay the announcement until the end of the month. It shouldn’t be shocking if the policy is revealed around the time of the BCCI’s Annual General Meeting (AGM), which is set for September 29 in Bengaluru.

The BCCI could surprise everyone by revealing the policy in the next few days, despite the fact that the AGM and IPL policies are unrelated. However, most IPL officials think it could take at least a week or two to make the news. Teams who have lately approached BCCI authorities on the retention rules are believed to have been informed that there may be a delay, even though there hasn’t been an official statement to that effect.

The auction earnings may not be significantly affected by the BCCI’s much-discussed decision to deem retired international players uncapped.

Following last month’s owners’ meeting in Mumbai, Board executives publicly stated that they expected the BCCI to release the policy before the end of August. But as the deadline drew near, franchise management called the BCCI and discovered a further delay.

CSK looking to retain MS Dhoni

It is currently acknowledged that, regardless of when the BCCI releases its retention policy, the franchises may have until November 15 to decide how to proceed with retention. The Right to Match (RTM) options will also be up for auction, with a December date most likely.

Perhaps this strategy isn’t just meant to help Chennai Super Kings and place MS Dhoni in the “uncapped” group because it benefits the league as a whole if he plays for one more season.

Even though the BCCI only permits two retentions, Dhoni would be one of CSK’s picks if he decides to play in the forthcoming season. Unexpectedly, this decision might also have an effect on players like Sunil Narine, who retired from international cricket a long time ago and didn’t participate in a Twenty20 match until 2019.

Uncapping retiring players is typically thought to have little effect on the auction purse because the BCCI will withhold a percentage of the purse dependent on the number of retentions. As an alternative to currently valuing each retained player, this will enable franchises to decide player prices.
