4th ODI between South Africa and Australia: Heinrich Klaasen's masterful performance, South Africa's highest total at SuperSport Park, and other stats

South Africa defeated Australia by a whopping 164 runs in the fourth game of a five-match ODI series at SuperSport Park in Centurion thanks to a blistering 222-run partnership between Heinrich Klaasen and David Miller and seven wickets shared by Kagiso Rabada and Lungi Ngidi. The current score in the series is 2-2.

When asked to bat first in the match, the hosts got off to a great start, scoring 64 runs in 12.5 overs while both openers challenged the Australian bowlers. However, Nathan Elis drew first blood for Australia by dismissing Reeza Hendricks for 28, and Quinton de Kock was removed by Josh Hazlewood after a quick 64-ball 45. Michael Nesser put a stop to Aiden Markram’s eight-minute stint as skipper.

Before Rassie Van der Dussen nicked one to the wicketkeeper off of Hazlewood’s bowling for 62 runs, Klaasen and Van der Dussen shared 74 runs for the fourth wicket. Klaasen and David Miller destroyed the bowlers, putting up 222 for the fifth wicket. While Miller served as the second fiddle in the partnership, scoring an unbeaten 82 off 45 to assist Proteas achieve a mammoth total of 416/5 in 50 overs, Klaasen scored his highest score of 174, which included 13 fours and 13 sixes. Adam Zampa was thoroughly outplayed, giving up 113 runs in 10 overs, with his final over going for 26 runs.

Australia’s top order struggled to follow down 417 because SA’s pace attack spooked them. Warner was out for 12 while Mitchell Marsh was caught for 6, both thanks to Lungi Ngidi’s superb bowling performance. Travis Head was benched out while Marcus Stoinis (18), Marnus Labuschagne (20), and Tim David (35) all received starts. None of them were successful in capitalising on their opportunities.

The one batter who made some headway in the chase, Alex Carey, was ultimately struck out for 99 thanks to lethal bowling from Rabada. Australia was eventually defeated by 164 runs after being bowled out for 252. With this victory, South Africa evened the five-match series at 2-2.

Let’s examine the statistics and data from the fourth One-Day International between Australia and South Africa.

South Africa tallied 416 total registrations, the most of any team at SuperSport Park Stadium. The previous record was set in 2017 by SA’s 392 versus PAK.

The second-highest partnership by a South African pair for the fifth wicket was 222 runs, which Heinrich Klaasen and David Miller scored. Top of the list is the 256* between JP Duminy and David Miller versus Zimbabwe in Hamilton in 2015.

Heinrich Klaasen scored 174 runs in this game, which is the second-highest total ever for a batter batting no more than five. Top of the list is Kapil Dev’s 175* against Zimbabwe in the 1983 World Cup.

For the second time in ODIS, South Africa has scored more over 400 runs against Australia.

scoring 400 or more against the opposition in ODIs is the norm.

Australia suffered its second-largest run-wise defeat against South Africa, losing by 164 runs. Previously, at Cape Town in 2006, they fell short of South Africa by 196 runs.

Alex Carey was the fourth Australian hitter to be removed on 99 following David Warner, Matthew Hayden, and Adam Gilchrist.

416 – South Africa’s 416 is their second-highest ODI score against Australia. In an effort to break the record, the first -438 was recorded in Johannesburg in 2006.
