Day 1 Review of WI vs SA 2024, 2nd Test: South Africa returns after a poor start

On the first day of the second Test, the West Indies and South Africa resumed their current Test series. On August 15, both teams were front and centre at Providence Stadium in Georgetown, Guyana. South Africa won the toss and elected to bat first to start the match.

The opening pair, Tony de Zorzi and Aiden Markram, were removed for 14 and 1 run, respectively, to give the side a terrible start. Tristan Stubbs and captain Temba Bavuma, who was out for a duck, combined for 26 runs in 65 deliveries.

In addition, Dane Piedt, who led his team in scoring with 38 runs, managed to remain unbeaten. Kyle Verreynne and David Bedingham scored 21 and 28 runs, respectively. With much effort, the West Indies bowling assault restricted the Proteas to a just 160 runs.

With five wickets in the first innings, Shamar Joseph was the highest wicket-taker for the home team. Along with Jason Holder and Gudakesh Motie, who each claimed one wicket, Jayden Seales claimed three wickets.

South Africa’s poor batting performance is followed by outstanding bowling.

When the West Indies batted first, captain Kraigg Brathwaite was out for just three runs, while Mikyle Louis was returned to the pavilion after reaching base for a duck. Keacy Carty made an effort to steady the innings, but he was removed after only 26 runs.

Along with Jason Holder, who ended the first day undefeated with a score of 33 runs, Alick Athanaze and Kavem Hodge were removed for one and four runs, respectively, due to their lack of influence.

The West Indies concluded the day having lost seven wickets and with a total of 97 runs. By the time day 2 arrives, they intend to reduce the 63-run side paths.
