2023 ODI World Cup Warm-ups: Day 1 Summary

The hitters essentially controlled the first day of the highly anticipated 2023 ODI World Cup warm-up matches.

First game 2023 ODI World Cup warm-up matches:
Sri Lanka vs. Bangladesh

At the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati, where Bangladesh and Sri Lanka played their first encounter, Sri Lanka chose to bat first. They had a strong start and appeared on pace to score over 300 runs. But in the middle overs, they lost wickets, which ended their innings. In 49.1 overs, they were out for 263 runs. Mahedi Hasan got three wickets for Bangladesh while Pathum Nissanka and Dhananjaya de Silva scored 68 and 55 runs, respectively.

Bangladesh was in charge from the beginning as it pursued the aim. Tanzid Hasan and Liton Das, the opening pair, had an amazing 131-run partnership. Before being disqualified, Liton made 61 before captain Mehidy Hasan Miraz entered at number three and quickly scored 67 to end the game. Tanzid, the second opener, also had excellent tennis, getting 84 points off of 88 balls. With eight overs left, Bangladesh easily defeated the opposition by seven wickets.

Second game:

Afghanistan vs. South Africa

Rain caused the second game of the day, between South Africa and Afghanistan, to be abandoned without a single ball being bowled.

Match 3:

Pakistan vs. New Zealand

At the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad, New Zealand played Pakistan in the third game. As the first team to bat, Pakistan got off to a shaky start when both of their openers were cheaply removed. The innings was stabilized, though, by the skilled middle-order pair of Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan.

Babar had 80 points before being taken out, but Rizwan played well and hit a century off just 94 balls. After scoring 103 runs, Rizwan was injured and forced to quit. Later on, Saud Shakeel came in and contributed magnificently, striking a quickfire 75 off 53 balls to aid Pakistan in reaching 345 for the total in their 50 overs.

At the midway point, it appeared that Pakistan would easily win the match. The pitch did assist the batsmen, though, and New Zealand’s batting power was on display during the chase. Although they got off to a rough start when Devon Conway was out in the second over, Rachin Ravindra and Kane Williamson went on to form an outstanding century partnership. Rachin played some incredible strokes and finished up scoring 97 before being disqualified by Salman Agha, while Williamson retired after reaching 54.

Then, Darryl Mitchell and Mark Chapman each scored 59 and 65 to help New Zealand draw closer to the goal. Jimmy Neesham’s a few strong blows were ultimately all that was needed to give the Kiwis a five-wicket victory with 38 balls left in the game.
