Braves' first win of the season is secured by Danni Wyatt

After leading Southern Brave to a seven-wicket victory over Oval Invincibles despite rain, England’s Danni Wyatt rose to the top of the women’s runscorers list.

After being dropped twice, Danni Wyatt struck an undefeated 46 from 37 balls to lead the reigning champions to a late first-round victory with one ball remaining in the match.

Two weeks shy of turning seventeen, Tilly Corteen-Coleman and Lauren Cheatle each took two wickets as the hosts were bowled out for 79 runs.

Rain caused the hosts’ innings to be delayed by more than an hour, but Marizanne Kapp scored an undefeated 26 off of 17 balls.

Consequently, a revised goal of 83 was established, and the Invincibles had opportunities to take Wyatt’s crucial wicket, which was dropped on 4 and 14.

Maia Bouchier was out cheaply and Smriti Mandhana was bowled by the outstanding Ryana MacDonald-Gay, who took 1 for 7 off a maximum of 15 deliveries.

Wyatt overtook Nat Sciver-Brunt’s 209 runs to take the lead in this year’s women’s competition before Freya Kemp was caught by Sophia Smale for three.

After that, it was up to the 19-year-old left-arm spinner to bowl the next five. She first held her never to limit Wyatt to a dot and a single, but Chloe Tryon was only able to reach a single thanks to a deft stop. But as Wyatt cleared space to shovel her over leg for the winning boundary, her experience showed.

After England’s young gun Alice Capsey had slapped her for six, Cheatle had previously removed Chamari Athapaththu for a duck from the third ball by edging behind.

Rain caused the game to be trimmed to 65 balls each side, with the home team down 38 for 2 after 35 balls.

Having Corteen-Coleman Before Kapp added some late firepower, Invincibles captain Lauren Winfield-Hill and the in-form Paige Scholfield both caught in the deep off consecutive balls.
