OTD 1983: India lift their maiden ODI World Cup title
Team India went on to win their first ODI World Cup on June 25, 1983, this day will always have a special place in the harts of Indian cricket fans.

Since the game’s global expansion, there have been a number of noteworthy moments in the history of cricket. Therefore, over the course of a few decades, Indian cricket has also advanced greatly and seen some amazing moments en route to triumph. India took on the tournament’s top matchup versus West Indies, the defending champions, in a real underdog tale. India batted first when the two teams took the pitch at Lord’s in London.

When the team first started, Sunil Gavaskar left after just two runs in twelve deliveries. Kris Srikkanth steadied the ship, scoring 38 runs in 57 deliveries, followed by Mohinder Amarnath’s 26 runs in 80 deliveries. India was fairly well-limited by the West Indies’ outstanding bowling attack.

With Madan Lal contributing 17 runs, Sandeep Patil scoring 27, and Indian captain Kapil Dev scoring 15, the Indian team scored 183 runs in the first innings. The Windies’ opening batsmen were dismissed early as the team advanced to pursue the target. One run was scored by Sir Gordon Greenidge, while Desmond Haynes scored thirteen runs. Only 33 runs were scored in 28 deliveries by ace hitter Vivian Richards. The middle order of the West Indies failed to take off as the top order collapsed, with Sir Clive Lloyd, Larry Gomes, and Faoud Bacchus departing early.

With an outstanding bowling effort, the Indian side restricted the Windies to 140 runs and won the match by 43 runs. Because of his 17-run score and three wickets in the second innings, Madan Lal was declared the Player of the Match. With the help of captain Kapil Dev and team, history was written, and India’s victory in the ODI World Cup became one of the greatest underdog stories in sports history.
